On 30 October 2026, the VLA Parents Salon hosted a public seminar, “Understanding Brain Degeneration,” at Glen Abbey Library. The event featured Helen Liu, Program Lead of the Brain Degeneration Initiative at the Readleaf Cultural Intergration who shared practical knowledge and valuable insights on cognitive health and aging.
Ms. Helen Liu prepared a highly informative speech
Drawing on her extensive caregiving experience, Helen has long been dedicated to public education, resource navigation, and caregiver support. During the seminar, participants learned about the fundamentals of brain degeneration, how it differs from normal aging, the ten key warning signs and risk factors, as well as strategies for prevention, early detection, and ongoing management.
The seminar was warmly received by members of the community, particularly local seniors who showed great interest in the topic. Several families attended together, with adult children accompanying their parents, creating meaningful opportunities for shared learning and discussion. Many participants expressed appreciation for the session, noting that the information provided could help families recognize early warning signs and take proactive steps to support brain health and slow cognitive decline.
The engaging discussion and active participation throughout the morning reflected a growing community interest in healthy aging and family caregiving. Attendees also shared their enthusiasm for future VLA programs and expressed hope that more educational and community-focused events will be offered in Oakville in the months ahead.
Ms. Helen Liu also demonstrated several simple cognitive screening techniques.
The VLA Parents Salon sincerely thanks the Redleaf Cultural Integration for its generous support and looks forward to working together to bring more meaningful community programs to Oakville in the future.
