VLA Parent Salon Representatives Attend Book Launch
On May 28, 2026, five representatives from the VLA Parent Salon—Borui Li, Lu Jin, Yewen He, Sherry Xu, and Ming Gu—visited the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto to attend the launch of AI Era – Redefining Teaching & Learning. As generative AI rapidly reshapes how young people learn and interact with information, many parents are increasingly anxious about whether today’s education system can keep pace. Their participation in this event reflects a growing desire among families to understand the impact of AI on learning and to seek meaningful dialogue with educators and researchers.
The event featured keynote speeches from leading international scholars. Professor Charles Hopkins of York University, UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability, delivered a talk titled “Education Transformation in the AI Era: Shaping Global Citizens for Sustainable Development,” emphasizing the need for value‑driven education in a technology‑saturated world. Professor Ruth Hayhoe, President Emerita and Professor at the University of Toronto, spoke on “The Teacher’s Role in the AI Era: Talent and Innovation,” highlighting the evolving responsibilities of teachers as guides, mentors, and ethical anchors.
The book’s authors, Paul Pu and Jim Slotta, presented the core ideas of their work, introducing the Anchored Learning framework and calling for stronger collaboration among schools, families, and communities to navigate the challenges brought by AI.
After the event, Borui Li (as a higher‑education professional), along with parent representatives Lu Jin and Yewen He, were interviewed by media outlets. They shared insights from the VLA community on family engagement, youth development, and the concerns parents hold as AI transforms the educational landscape.
VLA (Voice Linking Association) is dedicated to supporting newcomer families and youth. While the VLA Parent Salon focuses on home‑school collaboration, cross‑cultural parenting, and educational innovation.By participating in this book launch, VLA strengthened its connection with global education leaders and gained new perspectives to support families and students in the rapidly evolving AI era.
